The Civic Canopy has three internship opportunities.
1. Organizational Development
The Organizational Development intern will work closely with the Civic Canopy’s development team. Duties include attending development team meetings, writing grants, researching potential funding opportunities, and exploring organizational leadership.
See Organizational Development Intern Job Description for more details.
2. Community Organizer
The Civic Canopy currently focuses its place-based work in Near Northeast Denver, a geographic territory including Five Points, Whittier, Cole, North City Park, Clayton, Elyria, Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods, an area with some challenges, but at the same time bursting with opportunity and resident leadership. We are developing and implementing a resident-centered network organizing model in which relationship development is key and systems change with nonprofits, agencies and policies is the long-term goal. Our focus issues are education, food insecurity, healthy lifestyles, youth supports and building deeply connected communities.
See Community Organizer Intern Job Description for more details.
3. Systems Change
Much of the work the Civic Canopy does in the community—promoting cross-sector collaboration, strategic planning, group facilitation, public process development, creating networks of partners working toward common goals—falls into the emerging field of “collective impact” approaches to community development. In their groundbreaking article of the same name in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Kramer and Kania (2011) distinguish isolated efforts from collective impact approaches based on 5 conditions, all of which pertain to the Canopy’s work: common agenda, shared measurement systems, mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication, and backbone support organizations. This internship provides hands-on experience with the skills needed to help organizations and communities achieve more by working together than they can by working in isolation.
